USPA NEWS – Just five days after taking office, the Spanish Socialist Government experienced its first crisis on Wednesday with the resignation of Minister of Culture, Maxim Huerta, after learning that he was convicted twice in 2016 for defrauding the Treasury. His replacement, the manager Jose Guirao, swears his post this Thursday.
Maxim Huerta defrauded the Treasury more than 218,000 Euros by using a company to collect their emoluments in order to pay less taxes. Treasury detected the fraud and discovered that the TV presenter and until Wednesday, Minister of Culture, had unduly presented as expenses 310,000 Euros, including a house in a tourist area of Spain that was dedicated to holiday use. The sanctions of the Treasury were ratified by the Provincial Court of Madrid, which issued two sentences condemning him. The presenter regularized the situation, but the sentences indicated that he acted “with bad faith” and this has turned against him, forcing him to resign. In his farewell, Maxim Huerta attacked the press and stated that his “innocence is useless against this pack that wants to blow up the project of the Government” socialist.
The resignation of Huerta was inevitable, according to the analysts, since the Prime Minister was forced to do without him after having criticized a similar event that affected a member of the extreme left coalition Podemos. To replace the presenter, the most criticized member of his Cabinet, the Prime Minister appointed Jose Guirao, a prestigious manager accepted by all sectors of the Spanish Culture.
Jose Guirao has in his curriculum the direction of the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid and La Casa Encendida, an ambitious cultural project of the capital of Spain. He was also responsible for Culture in the regional government of Andalucia, where he launched several projects aimed at the conservation of historical and cultural heritage. The new Culture Minister was sworn in on Thursday. His appointment to replace the most mediatic of the ministers of the Spanish Government has been well received by the opposition parties, however, criticizes the error of Pedro Sanchez in naming Maxim Huerta.
