Dr. Fauci does not rule out that the new COVID-19 strain is already circulating in the United StatesÑŽ
President Joe Biden was informed about the latest developments related to the new COVID-19 strain “Omicron,” the White House said. Today, the detected cases of infection with Omicron were reported by the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy.
“Along with this, the leadership of the health authorities and the COVID working group are following the latest news about Omicron and are constantly in contact with representatives of health authorities around the world,” the White House said in a statement.
Omicron was first identified in South Africa this week. As a result, many countries, including the United States, have imposed travel restrictions on South Africa and at least seven other South African countries.
In the USA, a new strain has not yet been identified. However, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a leading American specialist in infectious diseases, said in an interview with NBC Weekend TODAY on Saturday: “I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened.”
“When you are dealing with a virus that demonstrates such a degree of contagion, and there are already cases involving travelers registered in Israel, Belgium, and other places, when you are dealing with such a virus, it almost always penetrates everywhere,” Fauci said.
